I've not had as much time as i would have liked recently to paint and play games. Real life has a tendency to get in the way of hobbies at times. That isn't to say I've been idle, however. I played my first game of Infinity N4 against a good friend, and I made some progress with my Ultramarines
| Haqqislam force ready to go |
Speed painting Ultramarines is a much different prospect than Skaven. I previously managed to paint about a hundred rat men in a little over 12 hours. Ultramarines are a much different proposition, having much cleaner lines, and requiring a higher degree of care. not to mention the application of transfers
I finished off the basing of my Eradicators, and I did the majority of the work, sans basing, on the assault squad, which leaves a mere 40 marines (30 tactical and 10 devastator) left to finish, plus a few characters. A kit bashed lieutenant, and the limited edition Imperial Space Marine.

If i have one regrte with the assault marines, its the Thunderhammer on the Sergeant. they are a lot less potent with the new rules than they were with the old, although they still might have a niche over the powerfist which are now much better. There is also now the hammer of wrath stratagem, and classic marines are now 2 wounds each, so I'm not completely dissapointed.
Learning Infinity N4
I also had the opportunity to play a good friend at infinity. The new edition is out, with some nice changes, and we tried some of them out. We didn't deviate from the N3 rules too much, and used basic forces. In my case the Haqqislam starter from Red Veil, facing the Nomad starter. I also put some new terrain down which i got from TTcombat. it's yet to be painted, but was a nice change from the forward base I usually use (and doesn't require the sale of redundant organs to buy). It was also a lot more open than i'm used to, but we still made an effort to close off as many firelanes as possible. not a perfect layout, but I've still got a few buildings to assemble.
I had intended to write a full report, however, I'm still not great at remembering to take pictures, and it was more of a friendly game than anything else. Its my first game of infinity in over 6 months, and about the same for my opponent. A few highlights though:
Infinity uses true line of sight, so big open windows are a bit of a problem, as a reverend healer found out to her surprise, taking a shotgun to the face. The new profiles are also great and follow the same technique as Code One (the simplified infinity ruleset) putting stat modifiers for the various abilities in the unit profile. this makes referencing much easier, and cuts down on having to check what the rules are for each ability in the rulebook

The new critical hit rules are also a lot better, requiring an additional save rather than just skipping the armour save. It at least gives 1W troopers a chance. its a moot point when the saves you are making are against an Al Fasid with an HMG with a disturbing tendency to score multiple headshots. The Al Fasid in question scored 4 crits in 3 F2F rolls...
| Al Fasid goes on a rampage, 3 kills! |
Needless to say, the Haqqislam force was victorious, locking down the board, and killing 6 out of the 7 Nomads, and securing the objectives. I felt quite bad rolling hot, but not nearly as bad as i would have under the N3 rules for crits.

Playing the game has reminded me how much i love infinity, and there is a massive difference between the heroic scale GW minis and the true scale CB ones. I'm tempted to push my ultramarines to one side and get painting Infinity again, tempted, but as another one of my friends has pointed out. I have a large collection of 'almost' fully painted minis, so i should get those done first. He's right, but Infinity minis are so pretty.....
Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
