The Average Gamer

I've made quite a lot of progress so far with the Tyranid army rescue. after about 6 hours of painting, I've got the red down, which makes up the fleshy parts of Hive Fleet behemoth, and painted the carapace armour black as the basecoat. The GW painting guide says to go to Sotek green next, and i'm looking forward to it. these miniatures have been a pleasure to paint so far. Adding the units to Battlescribe, a truly awesome tool for any player of 40k, the total points of the army so far came to about 800 points (including a hive tyrant which is not pictured). The tyrant guard are 1 mini short, and I only have the one Ravener, although it is a gorgeous metal mini. This is enough to play a few small games, but 40k tends to be about the larger games and a mere 800 points will not suffice. So I set about finding some deals that didn't look too bad on eBay.  Rescuing miniatures can be a really rewarding experience. Often its the case that you will get a handful of miniatures at a time, but occasionally a whole army falls into your possession that needs some severe work done. The background behind this is a little different from the usual 'bought the worst thing on eBay' story. A good friend of mine has recently decided to collect an Imperial Knight army, and he wanted them to be based. He's not the sort to take a long time to paint miniatures, being able to paint a whole army in the same time it can take most of us, even speed painters to paint a single unit, but he wanted the bases to look as good as possible. One of them was to be covered in a carpet of Tyranids, and the other was to have some deathguardesque stuff on it. Out came the box of nids that i didn't know existed, I was to use as many of them as I could and then keep the rest... I agreed, of course, and set about sorting what had been made available out. One of, if not the, most iconic miniature kits released by Games Workshop is the first. RTB01 or Rogue Trader Box 01 was released in late 1987 and contained 30 Space Marines in MK VI Corvus armour. The kit was multi pose, and included a vast array of options with which to arm your soldiers. While there are earlier Space Marine miniatures, RTB01 really cemented the look of marines, and the aesthetic has continued to this day. with the exception of their size, there isn't really all that much difference between these marines and the ones you can get today. Unfortunately RTB01 has been out of production for a long time, so getting hold of some can be quite expensive. there are always auctions on eBay, but these are mostly for already assembled miniatures in a variety of conditions, and getting miniatures that are new on sprue is more expensive still.  In October 2001 White Dwarf 262 burst into Games workshop stores heralding the release of a brand new army, Tau.  I was instantly hooked with their aesthetic and playstyle, and I've kept up to date with all the army books that have been released I’ve started and stopped painting them several times, and I’m now on my third attempt to get an army finished.  Painted in 2002 Quite fortuitously I’ve taken up the warlords challenge started by a friend of mine Cerantis , He's a twitch streamer and we have a couple of weeks to paint a single unit, with the intention being for all those involved to get an army painted by the end of the year. I was going to start painting the army anyway, mainly as a break from all the blue I've been painting. I’m quite certain I can get them done sooner than the end of the year, but its great to see the progress other people make at the same time and painting as a group can really help you maintain painting momentum.
