From golden light they come - Talons of the Emperor

The Adeptus Custodes are the most elite warriors in the Imperium. They are superior in every single respect to the Angels of Death, the Adeptus Astartes. they are stronger, tougher, faster and have better equipment. An injury that will kill a space marine will have little or no effect on a Custodian. The best thing is these elite warriors can be used in Warhammer 40k and 30k alongside their more diminutive, but no less terrifying counterparts, the Sisters of Silence. They are almost a pure close combat focused faction, with very few ranged options in the codex, and not that many more from the forge world options. Here is a selection of the options I have that are included in Codex Adeptus Custodes. Just over 1000points Of Custodes I started my Custodes army because I was quite sick of having to carry a large army to any games. Conveniently, a Custodes army will number 20-25 models, and is therefore easy to transport. They are simple to paint, especially if you go with gold as the prima...

Skaven: Lets try some speed painting, part 2

I have thoroughly enjoyed painting my Skaven army so far. The task was very daunting at first, with almost 200 miniatures to paint. Skaven armies are not small, rat lives are cheap after all. I continued painting these using the same techniques I had with the first units in Part 1  specifically continuing to use predominantly washes to paint the miniatures. I did use GW Mournfang brown on the shields as the basecoat rather than use just washes, and I'm happy with the results. I also decided to vary the Zenithol highlight i applied to the miniatures. roughly half were highlighted with liquitex white ink, and the other half I used Ghost Grey primer. In both cases this was over a red brown primer. You can see the difference in skin tones achieved below. this is after 2 washes of 1 part Seraphim Sepia and 1 part Lahmian medium. I did this to create a bit of variety in the units. I had been intending to make a start on my skaven slaves as well, the weather however conspired against me. ...

Infinity: Haqqislam Showcase

Infinity is a science fiction skirmish game made by Corvus Belli, a small Spanish company. It is currently my favourite table top game, and pits small special ops teams against each other in order to complete a variety of objectives and secure the ascendancy of their nation. When I originally started playing my wife only agreed to let me start collecting a new game if she got to choose which faction I would be getting. I agreed, of course, with the secret plan, if the faction she chose was a dumpster fire, of quietly switching to another one when she wasn't looking. I need not have worried, as the one she chose, Haqqislam is a dream to play. The miniatures, in common with all of Infinity's offering have a strong manga/anime aesthetic. The game itself is an unforgiving, brutal contest where given the great (but not perfect) balance between units and factions, victory will go to the better player. A single mistake, error in positioning, or wrong action can easily take you from b...

Gathering the horde

Building and painting an army is only a part of the hobby for me. My efforts over the weekend have given me the confidence to actually get everything painted without being too concerned about it taking me months or years. I started off today by applying Stirland mud to the bases of the clanrats and rat ogres I painted on saturday, its easy to apply, and once drybrushed with some grass added, I expect it will look like mud (imagine that...) with some not too healthy grass in it. Since my wife was working late I also took the opportunity this evening to undercoat over a hundred more of the stunning and brave rat men. It took longer than I had hoped, my airbrush clogged a few times which I will totally blame on the hot weather and not my lack of skill or experience. It's not a terribly expensive airbrush as I wasn't sure when I got it if I was going to like using it (spoiler, I really do) and I was also experimenting with the air pressure, paint viscosity and overall controlling ...

Skaven: Lets try some speed painting Part 1

Back to Basics - Speed Painting I've had an unpainted skaven army since Games workshop decided to end Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB) and replace it with Age of Sigmar (AoS). I'd purchased a couple of the Island of Blood boxed sets and assembled them, but not really gotten round to do anything with them. AoS killed any enthusiasm I had for that particular project. I've tried playing AoS a few times, but it's not the game for me. Fortuitously just before the lockdown started, a few gamers in my area started planning for a WFB 6th edition gaming group. I think its the best edition, and I still happen to own most of the army books from that edition, so naturally I dug out my skaven. put them on their movement trays, and there they have remained for the past 5 months. 250 pieces of grey plastic (and a few metal ones) mocking me. Skeletons, now 25 years old. My first 'proper' army for WFB was undead. I picked them for a couple of reasons; firstly I hated taking and le...
