Ultramarines: Completing the Demi Company - Making progress

I've had a somewhat slow week due to real life things happening, but I have made some progress and have almost a full Battle Demi-Company of Primaris marines painted. I somehow forgot to assemble 5 of the Assault Intercessors from the Indomitus boxed set, so they are next on the to do list. I also ran out of technical paint with which to base them, which is nice....

First attempt at adding battle damage to Ultramarines

I tried something different to how I've been painting the marines till now, and used a sponge to apply the base colour of Macragge blue over a washed down base coat. It has really added texture to the models, and the shading it creates is something i'm really happy with. The painted on battle damage I'm not so happy with, but it does the job and from a distance looks pretty OK, so i'm not going to lose sleep over it. I do however know how not to do it, and the effect varies in quality, improving on the minis I painted last over those I painted first..

Just the Big guys left

Once the last 5 intercessors are built, It will just be them and a few vehicles. The Repulsor I got from Conquest, the executioner and Invictor warsuit, and a storm talon that has languished in half painted state for almost 6 months. I generally find large minis a lot easier to paint once they are built, thanks to the large areas with no detail, so I'm fairly sure I can get them done quite quickly.

I'm also about half way through painting up the Bladeguard veterans and the new Lieutenant from the Indomitus set, so I plan on getting these done quickly as well.

More bling than usual

What remains afterwards is to complete the second half of the 2nd Battle Company, and this half will be made up entirely of firstborn marines. I'm going to try to speed paint these marines and put into use a lot of the things I learned when painting my Skaven. It's generally the big centre piece models that attract the most attention on the table, so you can get away with not investing as much time into the rank and file. As long as you are neat you can save a lot of time by missing out certain steps on your most numerous troops. It will also make the miniatures you do spend 50 hours on pop more on the tabletop.

2nd Company Firstborn

I've already undercoated the remainder, and even started painting a few of them. I decided on grey for the rank and file so that the blue wouldn't be too dark once I apply it over them, and black for the Lieutenant. Once i put a Zenithol white over him, it should provide a nice smooth colour transition (I hope) one error I did make is not undercoating all the weapons but its just a minor problem.

Plus armoured transport

And what would a Demi Company be without some Armoured Personel Carriers?

A few months ago I would have been daunted by the prospect of painting all these miniatures, and most likely procrastinated and not done anything. Now I am confident I can get these finished quite quickly without sacrificing much in the way of quality.

I'll keep you all up to date with my progress.

Let me know if there is anything you would like to see in future.

Skaven: Lets try some speed painting Part 1

Back to Basics - Speed Painting I've had an unpainted skaven army since Games workshop decided to end Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB) and replace it with Age of Sigmar (AoS). I'd purchased a couple of the Island of Blood boxed sets and assembled them, but not really gotten round to do anything with them. AoS killed any enthusiasm I had for that particular project. I've tried playing AoS a few times, but it's not the game for me. Fortuitously just before the lockdown started, a few gamers in my area started planning for a WFB 6th edition gaming group. I think its the best edition, and I still happen to own most of the army books from that edition, so naturally I dug out my skaven. put them on their movement trays, and there they have remained for the past 5 months. 250 pieces of grey plastic (and a few metal ones) mocking me. Skeletons, now 25 years old. My first 'proper' army for WFB was undead. I picked them for a couple of reasons; firstly I hated taking and le...

Ultramarines: 2nd Battle Company

With 9 hours of the year remaining, I managed to get my Ultramarine Battle Company finished. I had a minor mishap a few days ago when i broke my airbrush, so there are a few Rhino's I wasn't able to paint, but the important units, the actual marines themselves are all present and accounted for. This puts my army in an excellent position to be expanded in the future, with the majority of the troops I will be using painted. There are holes in the force, obviously. There is an obvious lack of Primaris Vehicles and Dreadnoughts, and the army is distinctly lacking in fast attack units. Company Command  The thing it took me the longest to decide was what units to include in the core of the Battle Company, and in the end I decided on a 50/50 split between Primaris and Firstborn. This will allow me to field armies of either, and I made sure to include the correct unit markings on each squad. Making the whole army Codex Compliant was a major goal for me. The only Company Command Unit...
