Death Guard: Plagueburst Crawler

It's not often that I agree to commission paint miniatures, but a friend of mine whose entire Death Guard army I've painted asked me to paint another Plagueburst Crawler in the same scheme to add to his army. Thankfully it's quite a simple scheme, made up predominantly of GW Death Guard Green with some metalics,

After getting some inspiration from YouTube i decided to add texture to the miniature before i started. I used Tamiya Basic putty mixed with thin poly cement and applied it to a lot of surfaces. the Putty/cement mix damages the plastic and adds texture to it. The downside is that it takes about 3 minutes for the mixture to dry, so you have to be quick when applying it. You will also need to use dead brushes as applying it wrecks them.

Once the putty was dry, which was almost instantly, I primed the whole thing in red brown. i picked that colour because there will be rusty bits on the finished product, and i wanted any places where the primer showed to be mistaken for rust, rather than be black, grey or white. I then applied the basecoat of green with an airbrush, but you could use a spray can or brush instead.

Next, i washed all the armour with Agrax earthshade. and then using a sponge, applied the base colour of Death Guard Green again. this, combined with the texturing done at the start really makes the armour texture take a rough appearance. At this point i noticed my first mistake. I applied the spikes on the hull too soon, this meant it was very hard to get full coverage with the sponge. I'll remember that for next time. I then painted the metal parts using Balthasar Gold and Leadbelcher. The leadbelcher was washed with agrax earthshade, and the gold with reikland flesh shade.

I added Edge Highlights with Ushabti bone, and then added some Lamenters yellow glaze to all the pustules to make it look like the armour is weeping. Finally, I added a lot of Typhus Corrosion to the tracks, and the front of the dozer blade, washed with very thinned down trollslayer orange to make it look rusty

the final stage was to add the flamers and the mortar to the miniature, both painted in the same way as the rest of it. I had intended to spend 2-3 hours on the miniature, but ended up spending closer to 10. I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Please let me know what you think.

Skaven: Lets try some speed painting Part 1

Back to Basics - Speed Painting I've had an unpainted skaven army since Games workshop decided to end Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB) and replace it with Age of Sigmar (AoS). I'd purchased a couple of the Island of Blood boxed sets and assembled them, but not really gotten round to do anything with them. AoS killed any enthusiasm I had for that particular project. I've tried playing AoS a few times, but it's not the game for me. Fortuitously just before the lockdown started, a few gamers in my area started planning for a WFB 6th edition gaming group. I think its the best edition, and I still happen to own most of the army books from that edition, so naturally I dug out my skaven. put them on their movement trays, and there they have remained for the past 5 months. 250 pieces of grey plastic (and a few metal ones) mocking me. Skeletons, now 25 years old. My first 'proper' army for WFB was undead. I picked them for a couple of reasons; firstly I hated taking and le...

Ultramarines: 2nd Battle Company

With 9 hours of the year remaining, I managed to get my Ultramarine Battle Company finished. I had a minor mishap a few days ago when i broke my airbrush, so there are a few Rhino's I wasn't able to paint, but the important units, the actual marines themselves are all present and accounted for. This puts my army in an excellent position to be expanded in the future, with the majority of the troops I will be using painted. There are holes in the force, obviously. There is an obvious lack of Primaris Vehicles and Dreadnoughts, and the army is distinctly lacking in fast attack units. Company Command  The thing it took me the longest to decide was what units to include in the core of the Battle Company, and in the end I decided on a 50/50 split between Primaris and Firstborn. This will allow me to field armies of either, and I made sure to include the correct unit markings on each squad. Making the whole army Codex Compliant was a major goal for me. The only Company Command Unit...

Ultramarines: Completing the Demi Company - Making progress

I've had a somewhat slow week due to real life things happening, but I have made some progress and have almost a full Battle Demi-Company of Primaris marines painted. I somehow forgot to assemble 5 of the Assault Intercessors from the Indomitus boxed set, so they are next on the to do list. I also ran out of technical paint with which to base them, which is nice.... First attempt at adding battle damage to Ultramarines I tried something different to how I've been painting the marines till now, and used a sponge to apply the base colour of Macragge blue over a washed down base coat. It has really added texture to the models, and the shading it creates is something i'm really happy with. The painted on battle damage I'm not so happy with, but it does the job and from a distance looks pretty OK, so i'm not going to lose sleep over it. I do however know how not to do it, and the effect varies in quality, improving on the minis I painted last over those I painted first....
